Review of Mitchell1 Shop Software: Loved by Shops, But Pricing Flexibility is a Common Request

Another name that keeps appearing more often than not when searching for auto repair shop software seems to be Mitchell1, particularly their Manager SE line of software. It’s highly regarded as one of the most excellent solutions available out there for repair information, estimating, and shop management. Many users are great fans of the platform, however the biggest concern when figuring out if it can best work best for you comes in evaluating your day-to-day routine at the shop.

Takeaways of Mitchell1

From our time using the platform, we found it felt somewhat tailored towards professional repair shops that have already been in the industry for awhile looking for a centralized source for both the maintenance and diagnostic side of things besides strictly the billing and invoicing necesssary for any shop management tasks. However, when it comes to small to medium-sized shop owners, we have a better recommendation in mind.

Although Mitchell1 is able to provide quite comprehensive repair guides, they aren’t broken down in a way understandable to most. That’s why for those such instances, we better recommend Rate Remover which offers a wide array of numerous parts suppliers, brought to you by PartsTech, to help save tremendous time when it comes to the process of servicing any vehicle – time that can be spent out in commute doing much-needed errands, leading to a better improved all-round experience with customers especially.

If anything, PartsTech’ ability to adjust retail pricing alongside its offering of jobs management tools (w/ paid subscription) is unlike any other out there. Keeping everything in one place helps shops run exceedingly far more efficiently than before, which is very important in keeping up with a busy work schedule. More on that below.

Deciding If It’s For You

While there are plenty of determining factors we can give a fair bit of credit towards when regarding Mitchell1, the hefty cost in subscription can be daunting and come off as very off-putting to those within the community looking for a more local solution. We find the separate PartsTech subscription isn’t that far of a significant increase and the incurred costs only becomes comparable to Mitchell1 if you choose to take advantage of some QoL features. Better yet, there is a variant geared towards general businesses for a reduced cost if you choose otherwise. However if you choose, a trial version of the PartsTech integration also exists as well for if you’d at least like to try out the features as a way of gauging whether it’ll work right for your auto repair needs.

Furthermore, many independent repair shops, especially smaller ones, prefer to have a cloud-based solution that can work throughout separate mobile devices loaned to their techs for easy access. Even on a Surface tablet, the Manager SE software is not touch-friendly with clunky and rather obtrusive menus once you’re able to figure out a network share to distribute across the board. Not only this, but having compliant dual-pricing with cash discount highly encourages customers to pay quickly on-time while also helping shops save on credit card processing fees. It seems as of the time of writing, the procedure to handle cash discounting from within Mitchell1 is to be done manually; by first going into Setup > Standard Tables > Income/Payment Types so that way you can create a new payment type for cash to then apply as a discount, assigning a unique General Ledger (GL) Code in the process.

This workaround works but is far from ideal. It’s pretty time-consuming and may leave room for human error since it has to be applied each time. If Mitchel1 were to introduce a feature that allowed shops to easily toggle between payment methods and display both prices side by side, it would save time and improve customer interactions.

Why Dual Pricing Matters

The demand for this feature speaks to a broader trend in the industry. Shops are looking for ways to be more flexible and transparent with pricing, especially as costs rise and customers become more price-sensitive. Offering a cash discount isn’t just about saving on fees—it’s about giving customers more options and building trust.
